Microcurrent Technology Details
![]()
There are many different disciplines in the vast field of electrophysical technology.
Their conjunctive relationship is the natural electrical current operating within the body.
One difference between each discipline is the method of approach to the body with
respect to this current.
Microcurrent is not only a term, but also a technology that grew out of the expansive field
of electrophysiology. Modern medical science acknowledges multiple processes in the body
that are electrical. Every cell in the body can be seen as an "electrical generator" which
generates electrical currents. These currents are measured often by means of electrical
activities in the skin (GSR), the brain (EEG), the heart (EKG), and the muscles (EMG).
(Moss) Microcurrent technology works hand in hand with these currents. This technology
recognizes the body as a self-healing organism and supports its many natural occurring
functions. In turn, microcurrent achieves a variety of results in the many facets of youth,
health and wellness.
"Weak stimuli increases physiologic activity and
very strong stimuli inhibit or abolish activity."
-Arndt-Shultz Law
The human body is an electrical being and the health of it depends on the energy
currents that run through the body. When the body suffers a trauma, (acne, sprain,
fatigue etc … ) it encapsulates itself in some manner for healing purposes (inflammation,
swelling, spasm etc … ). During a healing crisis such as this, normally free flowing currents
will circumvent the area of trauma and travel around it. This happens because electrical
current always takes the path of least resistance. (Arndt,Schulz) As a result, the flow
of electricity in the traumatized area is significantly reduced or possibly void. At this
point, the body as a self-healing organism is not recovering optimally.
Coupled with a trauma and a healing crisis, the details of the body’s needs are now
more severe. In order to return to a homeostatic condition the body must regenerate and
heal itself. This process begins within the body at the cellular level. The injured cells need
increased oxygen, protein synthesis, ion exchange and Aden osi ne Tri phosphate
(ATP). (Cheng) The polarity of the cells must be re-balanced, waste and toxins must be
eliminated quickly and the absorption of nutrients and reduction of microbes is essential.
Microcurrent stimulates the production of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP), which is stored
cellular energy that allows a cell to function. This in turn triggers the body’s natural
bio-chemical healing process. This process allows intracellular fluids to be restored,
electrolyte levels to be replenished, and the absorption of nutrients.
The stimulation of intracellular calcium further strengthens cellular balance and healing.
Amino acid uptake is increased, as well as protein synthesis, which assists in tissue repair.
Blood circulation and lymphatic flow are increased. These vital functions are increased five
fold with microcurrent technology to promote optimal healing and regeneration of cells
and tissue. (Cheng) Microcurrent uses a direct current that travels in a waveform. It is a
current with extremely low amperage that operates optimally below the threshold of pain.
It is operable only between 1 and 1000 micro-amps. It is completely normal for people to
feel next to nothing during microcurrent treatments. The operator usually directs the current
with probes, pads, or gloves. Microcurrent is utilized worldwide to facilitate and promote
healing, regenerate epithelial tissue, and rejuvenate muscle tissue. (Alvarez)
In the esthetics arena microcurrent is primarily utilized to treat serious demands and
indications such as muscle lifting and toning, skin firming, acne, pigmentation, scars, pre
and post-op healing, cellulite treatments, product ionization, and lymphatic drainage of
the face and body. It is a popular non-invasive technology, which gives the client freedom
to attain antiaging goals without the recovery and downtime of surgeries and other aggressive
treatments. Contraindictions for microcurrent use include chronic illness, pacemakers,
pregnancy, epilepsy, thrombosis,phlebitis, and cancer.
Microcurrent technology provides a re-education to muscles. Clinicians can tone and lift
muscles on the face or body with microcurrent by using lengthening and shortening
techniques. This is achieved by targeting the origin and insertion points of the muscles.
A lengthening technique is typically used on a contractile muscle, such as the corruga- muscle
located between the eyebrows. The clinician is able to manipulate the corrugator muscle
with microcurrent in order to relax and re-educate it. As a result, the deep creases that
can appear between the brows are significantly diminished. The same re-eclucative principles
are used for shortening techniques. The masseter muscle, also known as the cheek, is
prone to elongate, commonly referred to as elastosis. To combat elastosis, microcurrent is
used from the origin and insertion points to shorten the muscle and re-educate it to stay
tone and tight, thereby reversing the effects of aging.
Microcurrent technology offers a concept that is preventative for younger clients and
rejuvenating for mature clients. Mature clients usually experience dramatic results that
are almost always immediate and continue to improve and sustain with repetitive treatments.
A standard treatment course would ideally consist of 10 - 12 treatments over a period of four
to six weeks and a maintenance treatment every month to retain the improved muscle tone.
Pre and post-op microcurrent treatments can amplify results and promote healing function
5 times faster than the body is normally capable of performing during a healing crisis.
Depending on the circumstances, this treatment can facilitate desired outcomes such as less
scarring, crusting, and inflammation.
Cellulite treatments are heightened by utilizing microcurrent to increase blood circulation,
metabolism, and lymphatic flow, all of which help to combat the fatty pockets which
settle into colonies of excess fat beneath the surface of the skin. Lymphatic drainage
techniques are enhanced with microcurrent as it facilitates the lymph to move more
readily to the terminus. Microcurrent uses a negative current at the terminus, and the
positive current for the manipulation of the lymphatic fluids. The lymph is readily drawn
toward the negative charge at terminus for proper drain age. This procedure can be done
through manual manipulation with the use of gloves or unattended with the use of pads.
Lymphatic procedures are beneficial to heal and purify the cells of the body.
Microcurrent Education
Another very important point about microcurrent is the education about the procedures
for utilizing the technology. Due to the diversified uses of microcurrent there are many
different applications and techniques. Operators must understand and practice proper
techniques at all times in order to attain optimal results. These steps are paramount
or quality results.
